Description

Juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Old Gold' is a low-growing, evergreen conifer shrub cultivar with a compact, spreading habit, often used as groundcover or low hedge. Commercially, you may also see it being sold as a cultivar of Juniperus chinensis and Juniperus x media. This shrub grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, with graceful bronze-gold, scale-like foliage. Its new growth is soft, thin, and bright golden yellow. It is a member of the cypress family (Cupressaceae).

Thrives in full sun and tolerates a variety of soil types, as long as they are moist and well-drained. It is intolerant of wet soils and becomes drought-tolerant once it's established. 'Old Gold' requires no pruning, very little maintenance, and helps control erosion.

Attractive year-round color and texture, and well-suited as a foundation planting, low-growing hedge, or groundcover.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Monitor for aphids, bagworms, webworms, and scale. May be susceptible to blights and cedar-apple rust. Root rot can occur in poorly drained or wet soils. The bark and main stems may be affected by cankers.

The Clemson Cooperative Extension Home and Garden Information Center has a fact sheet on common juniper diseases and insect pests.
