Hoya bella

Previously known as:

  • Hoya lanceolata subsp. bella
  • Hoya paxtonii
Phonetic Spelling
HOY-ah bel-lah
Description

The beautiful hoya is a small, delicate, cascading, trailing evergreen vine that grows on trees in the tropical forests of Assam and Myanmar. It grows 1 to 2 feet in length, has glossy, fleshy, lance-shaped leaves, and abundant fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers with a pinkish-purple corona. This plant is popular as a houseplant in the United States due to its striking appearance and easy care. It is a member of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). The specific epithet, bella, is Latin, meaning "beautiful or lovely."

Prefers bright indirect sunlight and a loamy, well-drained potting mix. Adequate light is required to ensure that flowers are produced. Direct sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon may encourage flowering. The leaves are semi-succulent and store some water; therefore, they do not need to be watered as often as other houseplants. It is best to allow the soil to become almost dry before watering. Thrives in warm temperatures of 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels of 50 to 60%. Avoid cold drafts that can cause damage to the leaves. The plants are winter hardy in zones 11 to 12. Propagated by stem cuttings in the spring or summer.

Once the flower buds appear, the container should not be moved to another site or even rotated. It is also important to avoid removing the flower stalks after blooming. New flowers are formed on the old spurs. If necessary, lightly prune the plant to maintain its shape and to remove dead leaves.

The beautiful hoya's stunning flowers and cascading habit make it perfect for a hanging basket, whether grown in the home, greenhouse, or conservatory.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Potential insect pests include mealybugs, scale, and spider mites. Overwatering and poor drainage can result in root rot and yellowing of the leaves. Leaf drop can occur due to sudden changes in temperature and light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch. Low light levels can make the plant weak and leggy.
