- Description
-
'Pretty Pistachio' is a hybrid cultivar in the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae) with some hairy alumroot (H. villosa) in its background, as well as a western North American species, from which it gets its pink flowers. 'Pretty Pistachio' is protected under U. S. Plant Patent PP#29,361.
Plant in organically rich, humus-rich, medium moist, well-drained soils in part shade. Because the parentage of hybrids often determines the best culture, including optimum sun exposure, a hybrid such as 'Pretty Pistachio' does best in part shade and tolerates full shade. If you site the plant in a cooler climate, you can apply a winter compost mulch after the ground freezes to prevent root heaving. Trim back any tattered foliage in early spring.
'Pretty Pistachio' is an herbaceous perennial with chartreuse to lime-green leaves and clusters of bright pink flowers held on stems above the foliage from spring to early fall. It is a relatively short plant, less than a foot high, with a 2-foot spread and colorful foliage that is essentially evergreen in warm winter climates.
'Pretty Pistachio' works well as an accent in a shady part of the landscape. Use it in a cottage garden, shade garden, winter garden, rock garden or children's garden.
Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Problems: Frost heaving of roots can occur when winter temperatures fluctuate widely. Potential diseases include powdery mildew, rust, and bacterial leaf spot. Potential insect pests include weevils and foliar nematodes.
