Description

The genus Goeppertia is a tropical, broadleaf evergreen, herbaceous perennial native to Central and South America, and comprises more than 200 accepted species. It is a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). They grow in warm, humid habitats and are clump-forming with rhizomatous roots. The main attraction is their beautifully textured and patterned foliage. The stems and the undersides of the leaves tend to be purple or maroon. These plants are commonly known as prayer plants because they exhibit nyctinastic movement. This refers to the plant's leaves folding in response to the darkness. The leaves resemble the position of prayer. Many species of the Goeppertia genus were formerly classified under the genus Calathea. Through genetic and botanical studies, many of those plants were reclassified to Goeppertia.  In literature, you may find that they are still referred to as Calathea. The genus name Goeppertia honors Heinrich Robert Goeppert, a German physician and botanist in the 1800s.

Plants of this genus prefer warm temperatures, high humidity, medium light, and moist soils. The light should be indirect or medium to low light. The soil should be moist, well-drained, and a rich potting mix, but not wet or soggy. Avoid using tap water, which can damage the plant’s leaves; distilled or rainwater is recommended.  Increase the humidity in your home by placing the plant container on a tray of wet pebbles or positioning the plant in a humid location, such as a bathroom or kitchen.  These plants are hardy in zones 11 to 12, and the environmental temperature should range from 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Provide good ventilation, and avoid sudden temperature changes and drafts. Only fertilize during the growing season with a half-strength, organic, houseplant fertilizer. Photosynthesis may be slowed by dust collecting on the leaves. Gently clean the leaves with a soft, clean cloth. The plants are propagated by division. Repot annually to every 2 years, preferably in the spring

Different species have varied eye-catching leaf patterns: stained glass mottling, mosaic, striped, feathering, and blotching. Their shape can vary: lanceolate, oblong, ovate, or rounded. The leaf color ranges from medium green to dark green with variegated patterns in shades of white, cream, silver, pink, or lime green. Some species may produce flowers, but they are insignificant and rare.

Plants in the genus Goeppertia are typically grown as houseplants in the United States and are selected based on their foliage appearance. They require higher maintenance, but they will help purify the air and brighten your indoor living space.  In the tropical areas, they may be grown in a shaded outdoor location.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Potential insect pests include aphids, scale, mealybugs, and spider mites.  Airborne fungal infections such as gray mold can occur. Treat by removing the infected portions of the plant and improving air ventilation. Overwatering and exposure to cold temperatures can cause rotting stems and drooping leaves.  If the leaves have brown edges, it may be caused by low humidity. Curling or the development of yellow leaves may be caused by underwatering. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch.
