- Description
-
Goeppertia lietzei is a clump-forming tropical evergreen perennial species that is native to Eastern Brazil and is a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). The species is named after a "Mr. Lietz... of Brazil" who assisted the Belgian nursery that first imported this species to Europe. This plant has small, bushy habit, and grows up to 16 inches tall and wide. The dark green foliage has light green stripes that cross from the midrib to the margins. Some of its cultivars such as 'White Fusion' are highly prized as ornamental houseplants.
This plant prefers bright, indirect sunlight and moist, well-drained potting mix containing perlite or vermiculite to encourage adequate drainage. It is best to water this plant with filtered or distilled water to prevent leaf browning which can occur from the fluoride contained in tap water. This cultivar does best in temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit and a humidity level above 60%. Consider purchasing a humidifier or placing the plant container on a tray of wet pebbles. The plant is not frost tolerant and is hardy in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 11 to 12. Dust on the leaves can prevent photosynthesis; therefore, it is recommended to dust the leaves regularly with a soft clean cloth. The best method of propagation is division.
Goeppertia lietzei is rhizomatous and has long, slender stalks with variegated leaves. Each leaf has its own unique pattern similar to peacock feathers. The leaves are leathery, thick, oblong with wavy margins. Like other members of this family, the leaves fold up at night and unfold when the sun rises. The flowers bloom in the wild in late spring and are small, tubular-shaped, and greenish-white; however, it rarely blooms as a houseplant. The main attraction of this plant is its foliage. The popular cultivar 'White Fusion' has variegated leaves of white, green, and purple.
This plant can be challenging since you are trying to mimic the species native tropical environment. If you are up to the task, you will need to provide bright indirect light, high humidity, stable room temperature, and consistent moisture. Consider the cultivar 'White Fusion' for use in your home or office. The pay off will be a rare, unique and stunningly beautiful indoor plant.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs, aphids, and scale insects. Overwatering can result in root rot. Avoid getting the foliage wet and provide good air circulation to decrease the chance of fungal or bacterial infections. Low humidity and fluoride in the tap water can cause the leaf edges and tips to brown. Curling of the leaves can result from lack of water or low humidity. The vibrant colors of the leaf will fade if light is insufficient. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This plant is non-toxic to pets and humans; however the sap may cause skin irritation. Wear protective gloves when handling this plant.
