Gaultherias are evergreen shrubs of about 135 species in the heather family. They are native to North and South America, Asia and Australia. They can vary from low-growing ground-hugging shrubs of 8 inches to trees up to 20 feet tall. They can be found in warm climates of South America, the Himalayas and from California to northern Canada.
Some varieties are grown as ornamentals and others as ground covers. Most of them prefer moist peaty soil and some do well in boggy conditions. Most varieties prefer part shade-to-shade conditions but some tolerate part sun conditions. The summer flowers are bell-shaped and can be showy. Some types bear showy berry-like fruits in white, pink or red colors.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Fungal spots, leaf gall, black mildew, and powdery mildew can be problems.
