Furin-Tsutsuji Enkianthus campanulatus
Other Common Name(s):
- Phonetic Spelling
- en-kee-AN-thus kam-pan-yoo-LAH-tus
- Description
-
A deciduous shrub in the Ericaceae family with a narrowly upright habit of layered branches and tufted foliage. It prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil. It will suffer in dry weather but does well in clay soils. Excellent, smooth, warm brown bark. It blooms on last year's growth so prune immediately after flowering so you do not remove next year's buds. Plant as a specimen along a foundation or use in small groups in shrub borders. Rhododendrons have the same soil requirements so they are good planting companions.
Seasons of Interest:
Foliage: Fall Bark: Winter
Quick ID Hints:
- Seed capsules look like dried, upturned bells
- Leaves with hairy margins are crowded at branch tips
- Flowers are bell-shaped, nodding, in racemes
- Deciduous small tree or shrub, tiered branches
Deciduous shrub or small tree to 16', upright and narrowly rounded.
Blooms in late spring; fall color is brilliant yellow to orange or red; interesting growth habit (tiered) and fall color; most are seed-grown and must be vegetatively propagated to perpetuate a particular fall color; seed capsules are unusual-looking and are prized for dried arrangements.
Tolerant full sun or partial shade; intolerant drought; prefers well-drained, moist, acid soil; no serious pest/disease problems.
