Cornus capitata subsp. angustata Lucky Leprechaun® 'NCCE1'

Description

The Lucky Leprechaun® dogwood is a cultivar of the Chinese dogwood tree bred by Dr. Thomas Ranney of NCSU. It is evergreen and has a compact form, growing 10 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.

Grow Lucky Leprechaun® in partial shade in amended, well-drained, moist soils that are slightly acidic. Protect from the hot afternoon sun. It is resistant to powdery mildew and has high tolerance to common dogwood pathogens such as dogwood anthracnose.

This tree is a prolific bloomer, covering itself in 4-petalled pale green to white blooms from late spring to early summer that look amazing against the dark green foliage. The strawberry-like fruits persist into winter and provide food for the birds. In colder winter climates, it may lose its leaves in winter.

Use Lucky Leprechaun® dogwood as a flowering tree, an understory tree,  a specimen or a foundation plant. Use around the patio or in small groups. Use in a winter garden for year-round interest.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Problems:  The Chinese dogwood is resistant to many of the problems that plague the native dogwood.
