Description

‘Venus’ sweetshrub is a deciduous flowering shrub in the sweetshrub family (Calycanthaceae). It was developed by NC State’s Dr. Tom Ranney and is an artificial hybrid of the Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus), California sweetshrub (Calycanthus occidentalis) and Chinese sweetshrub (Calycanthus chinensis).

Like our native Carolina allspice, ‘Venus’ sweetshrub grows in sun or partial shade. It prefers some shade in hot summer afternoons, and it will grow lankier and less dense in shade than in sun. It grows best in average to rich, well-drained soil. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil textures and pH but prefers rich loams. It struggles in sandy soil and drought conditions.

This shrub will reach a height and spread of 5 feet. It produces dozens of ivory-colored buds that open to almost pure white, magnolia-like flowers. Flowers have a fragrance reminiscent of strawberries, melons, and spices. The heaviest flowering is in the spring, but additional flowers are produced throughout the growing season. It is tolerant of damage by deer and of clay soils.

Use it as a specimen in a patio planting where its sweet floral fragrance can be enjoyed. It can also be used as a specimen in a shrub border or as a foundation planting. It works well in a woodland or cottage garden setting.

Insects, Diseases and Other Plant Problems: No significant insect, disease or other problems. Spots on the tepals seem to result from a combination of flower thrips and wet conditions.
