The leaves on this vigorous, deciduous vine are deeply lobed, 3 to 5 lobes. It can be grown as climbing with few tendrils, trailing, or as an erect shrub. It can also serve as a groundcover when no support is provided.
It can be found growing in a forest or natural area, as a native vine in open woods It can be weedy in disturbed areas such as a landscape, or as a cultivated ornamental vine.
The flowers and berries are at their best when grown in full sun. This plant flowers on new growth. In order to control growth, cut to the ground in late winter.
