Description

The peppermint tree is an evergreen tree or shrub in the Myrtaceae family and is native to western Australia's mild coastal climates and habitats. The Genus name comes from the Greek agon meaning 'a gathering' or 'collection', probably referring to the flowers. The specific epithet is Latin for zig-zag referring to the stem pattern.

The tree will grow 25 to 35 feet tall and 15-30 feet wide in a tree or shrub form. It prefers full sun, tolerates most well-drained soils and is moderately salt-tolerant and drought-tolerant once established. Prune to the desired shape of a tree or shrub when young and in late winter to shape the tree. Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings in late spring or early summer.

The leaves are long and narrow and have a peppermint-like fragrance when crushed. The white flowers occur in small showy clusters along the stems in spring. Mature trees have a weeping habit and exfoliating bark.

This is an appropriate tree for warm coastal areas with mild winters in zones 9 and higher. It can be used in public parks, along streets, in large yards, as a specimen and in winter and children's gardens. Cultivars are available with reddish leaves and shorter stature.

Insects, Diseases and Other Plant Problems:  Phytophthora, root rot. Watch for scale insects, mites, sawflies, borers, and mealybugs
