What to look for:
This planting is in the corner of the stairs and deck and is a fairly shaded location. The evergreen Daphne odora has variegated leaves that brightened the corner, and the shrub provides fragrant late winter flowers. The Illicium parviflorum has anise-scented leaves when crushed and is also evergreen. The stones were gathered from the property to create the border. The overall design relies on simplicity and shades of green.
Horticulture:
Notice that leaves have been used as mulch to cover the bare soil and suppress weeds. They will eventually decompose and enrich the soil.
