- Description
-
Haage's zinnia or Mexican zinnia an fast growing annual in the Asteraceae (daisy) family native to Mexico. This genus is noted for their solitary long-stemmed flowers that come in a variety of bright colors. It is a carefree choice for the novice gardener, an easy plant to grow.
The preferred growing conditions include fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Avoid watering foliage late in the day. This variety of zinnia needs good air circulation for best performance.
It features narrow-leaved plants to 2 feet tall with 1 inch diameter flower heads containing yellow rays and orange center disks with a long blooming season. Some are single and have the appearance of a marigold or coreopsis bloom. Others are double or semi-double with a full appearance. Many varieties include 2 to 3 tones of color on the same flower.
This low maintenance plant is very tolerant of heat, drought, and pests. Powdery mildew is not an issue for Mexican zinnia as it is with other varieties and this plant is seldom damaged by deer.
Insects, Diseases, Other Plant Problems: No serious problems.
