The specific epithet would lead one to believe that this plant is native to Florida, but it is actually native to North China, Korea and Japan. Looking for a flurry of color in a small perennial shrub? Typically grown for its foliage, Weigela 'Sunset' provides unique variegated rippled foliage with green centers and multicolored margins ranging from and including ivory yellow, yellow, yellow-green, green, and red depending on age of foliage and time of year. In the fall the colorful gold foliage will turn to red, providing multi-season color for your garden.
Unlike other varieties of weigela, this variety is not a prolific flower producer.
This compact plant tolerates a range of soil types, air pollution and is clay soil tolerant.
Little pruning is necessary, however if you would like to prune to shape, do so immediately after flowering. This shrub blooms on old wood, so pruning at any other time will affect the next season blooms.
