Syringa 'Penda' BLOOMERANG®
- Phonetic Spelling
- si-RING-gah
- Description
-
Bloomerang is noted for its compact, rounded form, typically 5'x5', with dwarf varieties 3' or less. It is highly fragrant and blooms on both new and old wood. Bloomerang makes its initial heavy bloom in mid-May, similar to other lilacs. In June the plant rests, then begins reblooming in July, continuing throughout the summer until frost. The difference between the two blooming seasons is the size of the panicles. Those in summer and fall are not as large as those in spring but will be a darker color. To promote rebloom, fertilize in early spring when the ground has thawed and again after the initial spring bloom.
It performs best in organically rich, moist, neutral to slightly alkaline soils with good drainage and good air circulation. It should be planted in full sun and well-drained soil. As with other lilacs, it cannot tolerate soggy, wet conditions.
Like nearly all lilacs, Bloomerang lilac requires a period of cold weather in order to bloom well. This is why lilacs are not typically suited to warmer climates. They will tolerate warm weather through zone 7 but will rebloom best in cooler summers or if sheltered from the afternoon heat.
