Description

The Bloomerang® group encompasses lilac cultivars noted for their capacity to bloom in the spring, then again in the summer and fall. Several colors are available in the group, as well as dwarf (under 3 feet) selections. Lilacs are members of the olive family (Oleaceae).

Bloomerang® lilacs perform best in organically rich, moist, neutral to slightly alkaline soils with good drainage and good air circulation. They should be planted in full sun. As with other lilacs, they dislike soggy soil, or heavily shaded conditions. Bloomerang® lilacs bloom on both old and new wood. If pruning is necessary, do so immediately after the first bloom in early spring. Pruning at other times of the year will diminish the floral display in the following year. To promote rebloom, fertilize in early spring when the ground has thawed and again after the initial spring bloom.

Like nearly all lilacs, Bloomerang® lilacs require a period of cold weather in order to bloom well. They will tolerate warm weather through zone 7 but will rebloom best in cooler summers or sheltered from the afternoon heat.

Bloomerang® lilacs are suitable for Asian, cottage, children’s, sensory, cutting or butterfly garden. Dwarf selections are suitable for large containers.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Insect pests include scales, borers, leaf miners, thrips, and caterpillars. Powdery mildew can seriously affect the appearance of the foliage in the summer but does little permanent damage to the shrub.
