- Description
-
Scindapsus treubii has a trailing, vining, or climbing habit and is a member of the Aroid family. It is native to the tropical rainforests of Malaysia and Indonesia. It is a popular houseplant, but it can be difficult to find. The plant resembles Pothos, Epipremnum, and Philodendron. Scindapsus pictus is the more common species in the Araceae family.
Two cultivars of S. treubii that are available commercially include 'Moonlight' and 'Dark Form,' but they are still quite rare. 'Moonlight' has thick, glossy, milky-green leaves. 'Dark Form' has glossy and very dark green leaves that are nearly black.
This low-maintenance plant prefers bright indirect sunlight or filtered light with room temperatures between 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter will encourage this plant to thrive. It does not tolerate overwatering, and it is best to water when the soil is half dry to almost completely dry. Consider using S. treubii in a hanging basket, climbing on a small trellis or pole, or growing horizontally across a mantle or tabletop.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: The plant is susceptible to mealybugs. aphids, and spider mites. Root rot can occur with overwatering. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. If ingested, the plant is toxic; therefore, exercise caution if used in the home around children or pets.
