Description

The McCartney rose is a hybrid tea in the rose family (Rosaceae). It was bred by Alain Meilland and introduced in France in 1992 and to the United States in 1998. Parentage is (Nirvana® x Papa Meilland®) x 'First Prize'.

This vigorous rose grows 3-4 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. It prefers moist well-drained fertile soil in full sun. Allow good air circulation around the plant and avoid overhead watering to decrease the chance of diseases. Water deeply and regularly with morning being the best time. Prune in late winter to remove dead or diseased canes and to control size. Protect crowns with mulch in colder climates.

The deep pink very fragrant flowers are semidouble on a long stem making them a good cut flower.  Blooming starts in May with repeat flushes throughout the season. Deadhead to encourage reblooming. The foliage is a dark to medium glossy green on stems with prickles.

Use the McCartney rose in the border, along walkways and near patios to enjoy the fragrance. It can be used as a specimen, in small groups and in English or cottage gardens,

Received the Portland Rose Society Gold Award.
