Sea foam is a small hybrid floribunda shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) bread by Ernest W. Schwartz and released in 1963. Parentage is seed:[ White Dawn ® × Pinocchio (floribunda, Kordes, 1940)] × [ White Dawn ® × Pinocchio (floribunda, Kordes, 1940)] pollen:White Dawn ® × Pinocchio (floribunda, Kordes, 1940)
This vigorous shrub will grow 2-4 feet tall and spread 5-6 feet wide. In warm winter areas, it may get larger and be evergreen. It does best in full sun and average moist well-drained garden soil. Prune in late winter to remove dead or diseased canes and to control size. Mulch to help retain moisture and water during dry spells.
The flowers of sea foam are a white blend with occasional light pink shading. They are 2-3 inches across, fully double, and mildly fragrant. They appear in clusters and bloom in flushes throughout the season. The glossy dark green foliage appears on canes with prickles.
Sea foam can be used as a ground cover or cascading over a pot or wall. It could be trained to a trellis if desired. Use it in the English, cottage or cutting garden.
