- Description
-
The Mary Rose is a hybrid shrub rose in the Rosaceae family bred in 1983 by David Austin of Britain who named it after Henry VIII’s recovered flagship. Parentage is Wife of Bath ® × The Miller
This busy shrub grows 4-5 feet tall and wide and prefers full sun in amended well-drained moist garden soil. Prune in late winter to early spring. Semi-evergreen in warmer climates.
The pink 3-4 inch flowers have a strong fragrance and are fully double with 40-60 petals in a loose-petalled form. The flowers appear in clusters and the plant reliably repeat blooms through frost. Glossy green leaves are on stems with prickles.
Use this attractive shrub in the border, as a hedge, as a specimen or for screening and privacy. It will work in a cottage, cutting or English garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Good disease resistance. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
