Description

Lilac rose is a hybrid shrub rose in the Rosaceae family. It was bred by David C. H. Austin in 1990 and is part of the English Rose Collection. Patent No: PP 8,837.

This is a thorny, upright shrub with a bushy habit, reaching heights and widths of 2' to 4'. It prefers moist well-drained soil in full sun. Good air circulation is key to a disease-free, healthy plant.  Pruning to remove dead branches or crossed branches will ensure that air circulation is achieved.  Pruning is best accomplished in late winter to early spring. Avoid overhead watering.

It boasts large, fragrant, double pink flowers with a touch of lilac that occurs in spring and repeat blooms in flushes throughout the season. The medium green foliage is on stems with prickles.

Use this rose shrub as a hedge, in a shrub border, as a specimen or as a foundation plant.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Insect issues may include spider mites, aphids, beetles, borers, scale and thrips.  Diseases that can be encountered are black spot, powdery mildew, rust and rose rosette. For full information on common pests and diseases, please see the Rosa page.
