Description

Fantin-Latour is a hybrid shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) with an unknown breeder but discovered by Edward A. Bunyard of the United Kingdom and released in 1945. Parentage is unknown.

It will grow 4-6 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide with an arching, bushy, spreading form. Plant in full sun in well-drained, moist amended garden soil. Prune lightly the first 2 years then prune after flowering to 1/3 its size.

The pink flowers have a cupped old-fashioned look, are 3-4 inches across, have a strong fragrance and have up to 40 petals. Blooms once in spring or summer. The leaves are large and dark green on stems with prickles.

Received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

This shrub can be trained as a climber if desired. Use in the border, in a cutting garden, in small groups in a formal or informal garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: susceptible to Mildew. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
