Description

Grootendorst is a hybrid rugosa shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) bred by De Goey of the Netherlands in 1918. Parentage is R. rugosa rubra × Madame Norbert Levavasseur. It has produced a popular pink sport.

Grootendorst will grow 5 to 6.5 feet tall and spread 3-4 feet wide with an upright habit. Plant in full sun in amended well-drained moist garden soil. It will tolerate poorer soils and light shade.

The pompom-shaped flowers resemble carnations with their notched petals. They are red, 1-2 inches across with a mild fragrance and occur in large clusters. Blooms once in summer but may repeat bloom later. It has the typical wrinkly rugosa leaves and the stems have prickles.

Use this rose in the border or small groups in the cottage or cutting garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Good disease resistance. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
