Europeana is a hybrid floribunda shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) bred by de Ruiter Innovations in Belgium in 1963. Parentage is Ruth Leuwerik x Rosemary Rose.
This compact shrub grows 2-3 feet tall and wide with a bushy form. Plant in full sun in amended well-drained moist garden soil. It has good heat tolerance. Prune in late winter to remove dead, diseased and crossed canes. Blooms on new wood.
The 2-3 inch rosette-shaped semi-double blooms typically have between 16 and 30 petals. They bloom in clusters, have a mild fragrance and repeat blooms in flushes through fall. The young foliage starts dark red and turns dark glossy green as the leaves mature. Stems have prickles.
All-America Rose Selections winner in 1963 and the Hague Gold Medal in 1962.
Use this rose in the border, as a specimen, in the English, cutting and cottage gardens. It can also be grown in a contain for the patio and walkways.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Good resistance to root rot. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
