Pinguicula lutea

Common Name(s):

Phonetic Spelling
ping-WIK-yoo-la LOO-tee-uh
Description

Yellow butterwort is a carnivorous plant native to the southeastern USA in the bladderwort family (Lentibulariaceae). This herbaceous perennial is found in pine savannas and wet pine flatwoods, mostly in the outer Coastal Plain. The species epithet is Latin for "yellow,"

It prefers to grow in sandy nutrient-poor acidic soil in bogs in partial shade.

It traps small insects in digestive mucilage secreted on the upper surface of the leaf by specialized glands. The yellow spurred flowers appear March to May.

Yellow butterwort can be grown in a bog garden or container in moist but not submerged soils. Also used in terrariums.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: none.
