Description

Philodendron hastatum is a tropical, climbing herbaceous perennial in the arum family (Araceae). It is native to Brazil and thrives in the warm, humid, and shaded understory of the tropical rain forests. When grown outdoors, it can grow up to 20 to 30 feet tall. In the home, it can reach up to 10 to 15 feet tall  and 2 feet wide. As a houseplant, it is one of the most popular Philodendron varieties. It has stunning foliage and the climbing habit makes it the ideal choice as an accent plant, hanging basket, or vertical garden.

The specific epithet of this species, hastatum, is Latin and means "armed with a spear." The foliage is metallic silver, silvery-blue, or silvery-green and resembles a "sword's blade'. Initially the leaves are arrow-shaped, but with maturity they tend to elongate and become tri-lobed. The undersides of the leaves are copper colored. The flowers are a spadix surrounded by a spathe, but indoor plants rarely flower.

This plant prefers bright, indirect sunlight, moist, well-drained, rich soil, warm temperatures and high humidity. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves. The room temperature should average between 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid cold drafts or sudden drops in the temperature. In dry climates, consider using a humidifier or place the plant on a tray of pebbles with water. A moss pole or trellis is needed to support this climbing philodendron.

The Silver Sword Philodendrons has great ornamental value, and it also improves the air quality of your home by filtering out certain toxins.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs, aphids and scale insects. Overwatering can cause root rot. Provide good air circulation and do not let the leaves get wet while watering to prevent leaf spots.
