Description

The Jewel Orchid is a rhizomatous geophyte, a member of the orchid family, one of only two species in the Ludisia genus, and a native of Southeast Asia. It is a terrestrial orchid with colorful foliage, creeping stems up to a foot long, and small, white flowers. It is often grown more for its foliage than for its flowers.

The Jewel Orchid requires the warm, humid conditions of its native environment, whether grown indoors or out. It does best in intermediate light and, if outside, a shady spot in the garden. More likely, the plant will be grown indoors in a pot. In that case, the potting solution (a standard mix or fine fir bark mix for terrestrial orchids) must be moist with good drainage. If left in wet soil, the plant can quickly rot. A shallow, wide pot that can absorb the plants 2 foot spread is best. Provide good air circulation, consistent watering with tepid water, and weekly fertilization during the growing season with an orchid fertilizer.

Despite all the instruction above, the Jewel Orchid is considered a relatively easy orchid to grow as a houseplant.

Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Problems:

No significant disease or insect pests. Wet soil leads to root or stem rot. Watch for mealy bugs, thrips, and powdery mildew.
