Chinese Fringe-Flower Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Razzle-Dazzle' Play pronunciation

Chinese fringe-flower 'Razzle Dazzle' is a flowering, broadleaf evergreen, multi-stemmed shrub cultivar that bears striking, showy, delicate spider-like pink flowers in spring, with light to dark burgundy or greenish-burgundy foliage. It grows 3-8 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide, with a rounded habit. The unique foliage color paired with pink blooms adds multi-season interest to the landscape. This shrub is a member of the witchhazel family (Hamamelidaceae).

The 'Razzle Dazzle' shrub prefers full sun with some afternoon shade and moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil with a slightly acidic pH. It is hardy in zones 7-10, but it is best planted in a wind-protected site in colder climates. Provide mulch to retain adequate moisture during the summer and to protect the roots during the winter. It will require regular watering, particularly during dry weather, and is drought-tolerant once established. 'Razzle Dazzle' requires very little maintenance; however, pruning helps the shrub maintain its size and shape. Prune after the spring blooming period, since this shrub blooms on old and new wood. If necessary, apply balanced, slow-released fertilizer in the spring. Excessive fertilizer will increase foliage production at the cost of fewer flowers.

Consider 'Razzle Dazzle' for a woodland garden, or as a stand-alone specimen. Plant in small groups for use as a border, hedge, or privacy screen.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Typically, resistant to serious insect pests or diseases. Monitor for aphids and spider mites. Root rot may result from overwatering or poor drainage. Yellow leaves or chlorosis can result if planted in alkaline soils. The leaf tips will brown if the shrub receives inadequate water. May be susceptible to bacterial gall disease known as olive gall.
