- Description
-
Tellmann’s honeysuckle is a spreading, twining, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub or vine. It is an artificial hybrid of L. sempervirens × L. tragophylla. The first parent is North American; the second parent is Chinese. Nothing is known of the “Tellmann” commemorated by the hybrid epithet.
It does best in fertile, moist, well-drained soils and full sun, but is adaptable to various soils and can tolerate some drought once established. Tellmann’s honeysuckle is intolerant of alkaline soils and needs to be planted where there is good air circulation to help prevent downy mildew.
The yellow flowers (inherited from L. tragophylla) are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators.
It grows well on arbors, fences, and around light and mailbox poles, or as a somewhat loose shrub in the border. It is a good candidate for pollinator, children’s, or cottage gardens.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: This plant can be susceptible to powdery mildew and may be troubled by aphids and thrips.
