Description

The box-leaf honeysuckle of China is a low-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). The species epithet, ligustrina, is Latin for “privet-like.” The varietal epithet is Latin and means “cap-shaped” in an obscure reference to the shape of the fruits.

The box-leaf honeysuckle grows in sun or partial shade. It is salt-tolerant and does well in seashore plantings. It is drought-tolerant once established and if grown in shade, but it needs regular watering if grown in sunny areas. It likes humus-rich soils but will adapt to clay, loam or sandy soils. It should be pruned immediately after flowering. It grows readily from cuttings.

Box-leaf honeysuckle has low horizontal branches that will take root where they touch the soil and slowly spread over time, making it a good choice as a ground cover, especially on banks or slopes. It can easily be shaped by pruning, but keep in mind that it will flower on old growth. The small, fragrant flowers and the berries that follow are tucked away beneath the foliage. The berries are mildly toxic.

This species is a useful substitute for box (Buxus spp.) used in borders, parterres or edging. It is equally useful as a low, spreading groundcover. Use it in an Asian garden, a formal English garden or a cottage garden.

Insects, Diseases and Other Plant Problems: No serious insect or disease problems.
