Beesianum Jasmine Jasminum beesianum

Red jasmine is a fragrant, semi-evergreen, flowering, climbing plant in the olive family (Oleaceae). It is native to Tibet and central China, where it grows in slopes, thickets and woods at 3300 to 12,000 feet elevation. The species epithet commemorates the English nursery, Bees Ltd., which was one of the main sponsors of George Forrest's exploration of China. It was Forrest who introduced the species to cultivation in the UK.

It is best suited for USDA zones 7a to 9b, where it prefers medium watering in average, well-drained soil and full to partial sun. This plant can survive a light frost, though not a harsh winter.

Growing up to 12 feet tall, it requires frequent pruning to contain its height, red jasmine produces pink to red sweet-smelling flowers in late spring to mid-summer. It is best to prune after blooming. Glossy black berries last into winter. 

This vine can be grown as a grouncover on a slope or on a trellis or pergola. It is a good vine for Asian gardens, cottage gardens or woodland garden.

Diseases, Insect Pests and Other Plant Problems: Aphids or spider mites, leaf spot, and root rot can occur; however, insect and disease problems are uncommon for outdoor plants. Problems are more likely to occur for plants brought indoors for the winter.
