Blood iris is a rhizomatous plant in the iris family (Iridaceae) native to damp meadows and streambanks from Russia to Korea..
Blood iris will grow 1 to 3 feet tall and wide and prefers full sun to light shade in consistently moist, well-drained average soils. Divide clumps as needed to propagate. It is resistant to deer, rabbit and verticillium wilt.
Spring brings dark purple-blue flowers with white falls that are veined and edged with blue-violet. The semi-evergreen foliage is grass-like and attractive.
Use blood iris along ponds, in rain gardens or in containers. It is not considered invasive as is the related yellow flag iris.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Problems: Iris borers, thirps and aphids. Diseases include bacterial soft rot, fungal leaf spot and rust.
