Chinese quinine is an evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves in the hydrangea (Hydrangeaceae) family which is native to southeast Asia. Genus name comes from the Greek words dis meaning twice and chroa meaning color. In Latin, words febris means fever and fugare means to expel. Although the flowers are attractive, many consider the berries to be the best ornamental feature of this shrub even though the berries are often hidden by the foliage. Attractive berries usually remain on this plant into winter which attract birds.
It prefers to grow in partial shade in moist, well-drained, rich soils. The plants prefer acidic soils but can grow in any soil pH, which will have an effect on the flower color. Flowers will be dark blue in acidic soils and pale blue to lilac in alkaline soils. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions and will not tolerate standing water or drought.
This plant is one of the 50 Fundamental Herbs in Chinese medicine. It is used for a large number of different medical applications including reduction of fevers.
This plant can be an attractive accent shrub for lightly shaded borders or foundations and may also be planted as an informal hedge for screening.
