Wax Plant does its best when grown in bright, indirect sunlight, such as near a sunny window. Six hours of filtered sunlight per day is optimal, however, avoid direct sunlight, as the leaves can become scorched. Direct sunlight can be provided in the morning, but limit to no more than 2 hours.
Being frost intolerant, ensure that temperatures remain above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler temperatures can lead to damaged foliage. Humidity levels should remain between 60-70%. If natural conditions do not provide the needed humidity, a humidifier can be used, or mist often with a spray bottle. Placing near indoor vents and heaters can also dry out the foliage.
Its blooms are more noticeable during the nighttime hours, when they are also fragrant. Not liking direct sunlight, this plant contains pigments (Anthocyanin) that protect its young leaves from too much sunlight. Mature foliage can take on an attractive silver/pink hue when sunlight is present. Avoid deadheading old blooms, as that practice will affect future blooms.
Care should include watering with filtered or rainwater. If necessary to use tap water, allow it to stand overnight, which will place the chemicals at the bottom of the watering container. Falling leaves is a sign of overwatering. During its growth season, water three times per week, while during the fall and winter months, allow the top couple inches to dry out before watering.
A plant that does not mind having its roots tight, repotting is rarely necessary. Provide vertical support to allow this plant to climb. Like other succulents, providing good drainage is imperative. Consider terracotta pots or planters that have sufficient drainage holes.
Maintenance includes trimming the plant should it become too large. It's best to be performed after flowering.
Maturity may be reached for up to two years.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: The sap from this plant can cause skin irritation, wear gloves when handling. Mealybugs, aphids, and whiteflies are some insects that are attracted to Hoya pubicalyx. Too much water can lead to root rot and leaf drop.
