Statice Goniolimon tataricum

Statice is a herbaceous perennial in the Plumbaginaceae (leadwort or plumbago) family and is native to Europe. It is grown as a garden plant and also by the floral industry. The plant grows in a rosette of leaves and sends up a stem in midsummer with clusters of tiny light lavender to pink tubular flowers. mid-summer. 

The Genus name comes from the Greek gonia meaning an angle and limon meaning a meadow for the angled flowers and meadow habitat of some plants.

Statice has wide, attractive leaves and flowers produced in upright, many-branched panicles. The plant prefers full sun to partial shade in well-drained soils. Provide good air circulation to decrease fungal disease problems. It is drought and deer tolerant and will not like wet winter soils. Use in the border, groupings or in a rock garden. The flowers are also prized for drying and it is best to cut the stems right before the flowers open and hang them upside down in a cool dry area.

Division is difficult because the plant develops a long taproot, so do not disturb established plantings.  Propagate by seed or root cuttings in late fall.
