Sword Lilies Gladiolus

Previously known as:

  • Acidanthera
  • Antholyza
Phonetic Spelling
glad-ee-OH-lus
Description

These fragrant flowers open one at a time along the stem and are great for cutting.  Numerous cultivars are available.

Gladiolus prefers full to PM sun and well-drained soil.  They thrive in damp borders.  Plant corms to a depth of 5 in. (12.5 cm) and space 5-8 in. apart.  They are Tender III class and are injured below 25 degrees F (2 degrees C).  Delay planting until soil has warmed and make consecutive plantings to extend the flowering season.

The flower is edible but works best as a garnish or as a container for dip or spread.
