- Description
-
Golden Euryops is a compact, perennial, evergreen shrub in the daisy family native to the rocky slopes of the South African Cape, the only place where the plant occurs naturally. It has finely divided gray-green leaves that provide a great backdrop to the cheery yellow, 2 inch flowers that appear almost year-round in mild climates and are attractive to pollinators. The genus name comes from the Greek for 'large eye', referring to the showy flowers. The species name comes from Latin for somethig with narrow divisions like a comb, referring to the divided leaves.
Plant Golden Euryops in well-drained, deep soil and sited in full sun for the best blooms. The plant does tolerate some shade, but the blossoms will not be as prolific. It is more often grown in the garden for its almost perpetual flowering. It must be grown in a sheltered location, away from frost-prone areas. The plant requires a moderate amount of water through all seasons.
Golden Euryops is a vigorous grower, but you can prune it back after flowering to a desired shape. Cut off dead flowerheads after flowering. There are 96 other species of Euryops that occur in southern and tropical Africa as well as in Saudi Arabia.
