A group of herbaceous perennials in the family Berberidaceae. Commonly called Bishop's Hat or Barrenwort, the genus name is of unclear origin and meaning. Most species are native to China. Species have small, charming, four-pointed flowers that can come in shades of red, pink, white, and yellow, blooming between May and June. This plant acts as an evergreen in the Sandhills of North Carolina.
Growth rate varies with species. Grows best in partial shade.
