Rose Deutzia is a compact, rounded, hybrid, deciduous shrub. It is multi-stemmed with arching branches and dark green foliage. Clusters of pale pink flowers bloom in late spring. The shrub size is 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide. It is a member of the Hydrangeaceae or hydrangea family.
This hybrid resulted from the cross between Deutzia gracilis and Deutzia purpurascens. A cultivar for this hybrid is 'Carminea' which has blush pink flowers and buds. 'Nikko Blush' resulted from the cross between Deutzia gracilis "Nikko" and Deutzia x rosea 'Carminea' and has pink-blushed flowers in late April to early May.
The genus name, Deutzia, honors a Dutch amateur botanist from the 1700's, Johan van der Deutz. The hybrid name, rosea, means "rose flowered' and refers to the color of the flowers.
Rose Deutzia is easily grown in well-drained average garden soil in full sun to partial shade; however, abundant flowering occurs in full sun. This plant is low maintenance, but annual pruning is required to remove old dead branches and should be done immediately after blooming has finished. Keep in mind when pruning that blossoms will appear on old growth. To propagate this shrub softwood cuttings should be taken during the summer.
The leaves are dark green, ovate to lanceolate with toothed margins. The tiny flowers are 5-petaled, pink blossoms that are paler pink on the interior. They are borne on broad clusters along the stems.
Plants from this genus are seldom bothered by deer. Rose Deutzia could be used as a foundation planting, in small groups, shrub borders, or hedge.
