- Description
-
Bamburanta is an evergreen herbaceous perennial that is native to the tropical forests of Brazil. In its native habitat, it forms bushes almost 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. As a houseplant, it is somewhat smaller and has an upright and clumping habit, and grows up to 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. It is a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). The stems resemble bamboo canes, and the ornamental foliage is dark green with streaks of cream or yellowish-green variegation. The genus name, Ctenanthe, originates from two Greek words, ktenos, meaning "comb," and anthera, meaning "anther."
The plant prefers bright, indirect light and a moist, well-drained mix of humus or all-purpose potting mix with orchid bark and perlite. Distilled water or filtered water is recommended, and it should be watered when the top inch of the soil feels dry. It requires medium to high humidity and temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. A humidifier may be required. It is intolerant of drafts, direct sunlight, and temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Use half-strength fertilizer once per month when the plant is actively growing. It is best propagated by division.
The plants ornamental leaves are lanceolate or obovate, and measure about 6 inches long and 3 to 6 inches wide. The upper surface of the leaf is dark green with the variegation of cream and yellow, and the undersides are a lighter green. Its flowers appear as short clusters of white tubular blooms that are rather inconspicuous. As a houseplant, it rarely flowers. As with other members of the prayer plant family, the leaves of this plant will fold in the evening and then re-open in the morning.
This plant is grown as a houseplant primarily for its strikingly beautiful foliage..
Quick ID Hints:
- Stems are above ground, branched
- The leaf pattern is indistinct, a light marbling
- Leaf underside is green
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: This plant is generally disease free, but needs to be monitored for potential insects pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Exposure to bright sun can cause leaf scorch. These plants are sensitive to the salts in tap water that can cause leaf burn or leaf spots. Leaf curl or wilt can occur if the plant has been inadequately watered.
