- Description
-
This Genus in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and consists of 24 species of which many are used as ornamentals. They are native to Australia, New Zealand and many of the western Pacific islands. The Genus name comes from the Greek word kordyle, meaning "club," a reference to the enlarged underground rhizomes.
Size will vary according to species with some 3-6 feet tall and others up to 40 feet tall. They will do well in full sun to partial shade in well-drained garden soil and are drought-tolerant once established. They will need protection in areas prone to frost. Some species are best grown as house plants.
The strap-like leaves come in a variety of colors from green to variegated pinks and purples. The stems become woody as the plant grows into a tree-like form. The flowers are very fragrant and attract bees.
Use this plant in the border, in groups or to add a tropical flare. They will do well in a container also.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No significant problems. Cold wet soils can cause rotting of the rhizomes and die back. Watch for mealybugs.
