African Corn Flag Chasmanthe

Other Common Name(s):

Phonetic Spelling
chas-MAN-thay
Description

Afrian Corn Flag is a perennial herb with red to yellow flowers and long narrow leaves found in the coastal ranges. It is native to southern Africa. It favors dunes, scrub and chaparral habitats. It reproduces by corms which multiply rapidly, making it potentially weedy in the garden. Seeds are dispersed by birds and water.

Full to AM sun with very low water needs.  Bury corms 5 in. (12.5 cm) deep in the soi and 6-10 in apartl. Tender III- injured below 25 degrees F and may not be able to be permanently established in NC climates.  Divide every 3-4 years, when dormant, to spur heavier flowering.
