Other Common Name(s):

Description

China aster is a cool-weather annual native to China in the daisy family (Asteraceae). The Genus name comes from the Greek words kalli- meaning beautiful and stephos, meaning a crown in reference to the flowers. The specific epithet means Chinese.

The plant grows easily in rich, consistently moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Plants can be started indoors from seed or directly planted in the garden or purchased as bedding plants. Keep the soil moist, provide good air circulation around the plants, and, in some cases, provide support for tall plants. Plants can grow 1 to 3 feet tall. The species is rarely used as there are many nice cultivars available.

China aster displays showy, 3-5-inch diameter blooms from early summer to fall. A large number of cultivars are available that range in height from 8 to 36 inches and whose flower appearance ranges from single daisy-like flower heads with yellow centers to fully double flower heads with shaggy to pompom form. Colors include shades of white to pink, red, blue, violet, purple and yellow. In addition to the plants colorful appearance, it will also attract bees and other pollinators.

Use these plants in containers, in the border front or middle and in groups of cutting and cottage gardens.

Diseases, Insects, and Other Plant Problems: Watch for aphids and spider mites, leafhoppers, wilt, or stem rot. Site plants in different locations each year to help prevent diseases. Destroy diseased plants.
