Brassica napus (Pabularia Group)

The Pabularia Group is commonly called red Russian kale or Siberian kale  in the mustard family (Brassicaceae) and is a hybrid cold-weather vegetable. They are a result of breeding Brassica rapa (field mustard) and Brassica oleracea. The genus name Brassica is Latin for cabbage.

This kale will grow 1-3 feet tall and wide and prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. Plant in humus-rich garden soil for best results. Keep the soil moist but good drainage is needed. Seeds can be started inside or in the ground. In warmer winter areas such as NC, It will taste best if planted in the fall and will last into early spring. Frost improves its flavor and it is hardy to 10 degrees F.  

These kales are more tender than other varieties with a milder taste. They are also more resistant to insects and diseases and more winter hardy.  The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked.  In spring the plant will bolt and send up a flower stalk with yellow flowers that bees are attracted to. 

Use this plant in the fall, winter and spring edible garden. There are several cultivars available for use.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Diseases affecting this plant include club root, leaf spot, and black rot.  Insect problems include flea beetles, aphids, whitefly, root maggots and fungus gnats.
