Mexican Lily is a clump-forming, stemless, herbaceous, semi-woody yucca in the agave family with gray-green stiff leathery leaves and attractive flowers. It is native to northern Mexico and works well in containers or planted in small groups along a shrub border. Its architectural shape makes it a lovely specimen plant with soft leaves and it is right at home in a drought-tolerant rock garden. The genus honors Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Beschorner, a German amateur botanist. The epithet, yuccoides, derives from the botanical name of the genus Yucca, and oides is Greek, meaning "likeness".
Mexican Lily does not tolerate frosts and is best grown in warm, sheltered south- or west-facing sites in full sun, where temperatures do not fall below 23 °F. In North Carolina, it can be grown under glass or indoors. The plant requires little water. This species is native to Mexico where it often is found on rocky slopes.
