Bambusa multiplex

Phonetic Spelling
bam-BOO-suh MUL-tee-pleks
Description

Hedge bamboo is an evergreen grass in the Poaceae family native to the Eastern Himalayas to southern China and can be found growing in fields, mountains, low hills and riversides. It is not a running bamboo and so is not considered invasive.

This fast-growing, dense bamboo will reach up to 25 feet tall and 6 feet wide with a graceful arching form. It prefers full sun to dappled sun in moist, fertile soil with lots of compost. and humid conditions It is important to water well during the first growing season. Prune in early spring to remove any dead stems, increase air circulation and stimulate new growth. Propagation is by seed or division.

The foliage is the primary attraction for hedge bamboo and the oval leaves are medium to dark green. The culms grow to about 1.6 inches in diameter. Due to the arching form, they do not make good bamboo poles. These plants rarely bloom and may do so only once every decade or so.

In areas where the temperature doesn't drop below 15°F, hedge bamboo makes a great dense hedge or privacy screen. It can also be used in an Asian or Zen garden. There are several cultivars available.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:    Watch for Aphids, scale, spider mites and mealybugs. Potential diseases are sooty mild, culm rot/blight, fungal spots and witches broom.
