Allium 'Millenium'

Description

'Millenium' is a hybrid ornamental in the onion family (Amaryllidaceae) bred by Mark McDonough. The parentage is unknown.

It grows 1 to 1.5 feet tall in full sun to partial shade in dry to medium moist, well-drained soil. Plant bulbs in the fall and deadhead spent flowers to prevent unwanted self-seeding, although this particular allium doesn't reseed too readily. Divide bulbs as needed in spring or fall.

Flowers appear in mid to late summer on 18 to 20-inch sturdy stems. The long-lasting rosy purple florets appear in round umbels up to 2 inches across. The narrow upright leaves and flowers have an onion-like odor but are not edible. It was chosen as the 2018 Plant of the Year.

Use this Allium in borders or groups of cutting or cottage gardens.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: -   Bulb rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Watch for thirps. Watch for  mildew, rust and leaf spots.
