Description

Largeflower aster is a native perennial wildflower in the daisy family Asteraceae) native to the Atlantic coastal plain and Piedmont of North Carolina and South Carolina, and the coastal plain of Virginia.  It grows in sandy areas, roadsides, thickets, forest edges and disturbed sites.  

Largeflower aster grows 2 to 3 feet tall in full sun in sandy to loamy, moist to dry, well-drained soils. Propagation is by seed or division of the rhizomes.

The 1 to 2 inch deep purple flowers have many rays surrounding a reddish-purple center of disc flowers. They appear in September through November are one of the last asters to bloom. Awarded the 2026 NC Wildflower of the Year by the North Carolina Botanical Gardens.

Use this aster in the pollinator or native garden. It can also be used in naturalized areas as meadows. It will look great paired with goldenrods.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Watch for aphids, leafhoppers, spider mites and lace bugs. Potential diseases are asters yellow, powdery mildew and rust.
