Description

Orangish to reddish-brown bark exfoliating in strips; often hidden by foliage; branches become pendulous and spreading with age; dense shade when young

It prefers rich moist, well-drained soil and an open location.  It is not drought or air pollution tolerant.  Its texture is medium to course.  When in its youth, the form is spire-like to broadly pyramidal.  As it ages, the form is straight with horizontal branches in whorls.  it is stiff and twiggy.
