Description

'Thelma' is a hybrid Wichurana rambler in the rose family (Rosaceae) bred by Walter Easlea, Jr. of the United Kingdom and introduced in 1927. Parentage is Rosa wichuraiana Crép. synonym × Paul's Scarlet Climber. The plant was named for the breeder's granddaughter from New Zealand.

This vigorous rambler will grow 10-12 feet tall and spread 6-8 feet wide. Plant in full sun in amended well-drained moist garden soil. Pruning can be accomplished after flowering has finished.

The semi-double 3-4 inch flowers are coral and deep pink with a touch of yellow towards the center, slightly scented and grow in clusters. It will boom in late spring to early summer and may have scattered blooms later in the season. Foliage is glossy light green on stems with few to no prickles.

Use this rose on any verticle surface as a trellis or fence. It can be used as a hedge, for screening and privacy and in a cottage or cutting garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Watch for powdery mildew, blight, black spot and rust. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
